The offensive had already lasted three days, but we had not gained much ground. Our troops engaging the enemy at the front were faced with strong/fierce/stiff resistance. The division commander instructed our battalion to get around to the rear of the enemy and launch a surprise attack. To do so, however, we had to cross a marshland and many of us were afraid we might get bogged down in the mud. Our battalion commander decided to take a gamble. We started under cover of darkness and pressed on in spite of great difficulties. By a stroke of luck, the temperature at night suddenly dropped to minus 20 degrees Celsius and the marsh froze over. Thanks to the cold weather, we arrived at our destination before dawn and began attacking the enemy from the rear. This turned the tide of the battle. The enemy, caught off guard, soon surrendered.
Automobiles have, since their invention, revolutionized transportation, changing forever the way people live, travel, and do business. On the other hand, they have brought hazards, especially highway fatalities. However, today the application of computer technology and electronic sensors in designing and manufacturing cars makes it possible to eliminate most of traffic accidents. For example, electronic sensors mounted in your car can detect alcohol vapor in the air and refuse to start up the engine. They can also monitor road conditions by receiving radio signals sent out from orbiting satellites and greatly reduce your chances of getting stuck in traffic jams.
Well begun, half done,as the saying goes. It is extremely important for a job applicant to do his homework while seeking employment. From my standpoint, whether or not one has done his homework clearly makes a difference in his chance of success.
I have a friend who is earning somewhere in the neighborhood of100,000 dollars a years in a large computer software company. He told me that from his own experience the decision makers who interview prospective employees like people who are well prepared. Those who make no endeavor to learn as much about his prospective employer as possible don’t have much of a chance of success.
Globalization has great implications for young Chinese. For example, young farmers are moving on a large scale to urban areas to look for jobs. And for those young people who aspire to study abroad or work in foreign-invested enterprises, English has become increasingly important. At the same time, a considerable number of overseas Chinese students have returned home in recent years, for they hold an optimistic outlook for the long-term growth of the Chinese economy. The internet has strengthened the links between Chinese young people and those elsewhere. They follow the latest trend and copy foreign fashions. Some of them don’t seem to care for traditional Chinese virtues, let alone carry them forward, which has given rise to worries that the traditional Chinese culture might one day vanish.
For my own part, I find that appearances are all too often deceptive. For instance, you might be wrong if you judged by appearances only people like Edward Hyde Burton. In appearance, he seemed a man all of a piece. He was a tiny little fellow with white hair and mild blue eyes, gentle and candid. Nevertheless, he turned out to be very cruel. He insulted and fooled Lenny who was down and out and made him commit himself to an insane venture. What was still more surprising was that he was completely indifferent to Lenny’s death. Without doubt, Burton was a man with a heart of stone.
Today we are under constant pressure to work longer hours, to produce more, and to possess more. Lots of people hold the wrong perception that happiness lies in working hard and earning well/ good money.
Many women today feel the same stress to work and get ahead and, at the same time, to nurture their offspring and shoulder the burden of domestic responsibilities.
Research shows that workaholism tends to distance us from our immediate families. It forces us to toil longer and longer hours, leaving a minute fraction of our time to be physically and emotionally available to our loved ones. Intimacy among family members is doomed to die in the process.
Today, long after the earthquake shook/hit my home town, I can still recall, in crystal detail, what I
saw as I ran out of my home with my parents. The building just across the street toppled right before our eyes, debris flew everywhere and a cloud of choking dust blotted out the sun. Horror-stricken people ran in all directions, crying and screaming.
Now, many years after that tragic event, a new town has risen on the wreckage of the old one. In
the town square, a memorial has been built to remember those killed in the disaster. It seems the
wounds in people’s hearts have healed, but the memory will linger.
Last Wednesday, my classmate Caroline and I visited Zhouzhuang, a well-known town looped all around by streams. When we arrived at the town, Caroline was so excited that she darted towards the first bridge she saw and began singing loudly there. Suddenly her voice hushed when she found that she had startled a flock of ducks not too far from us. Now as Caroline was dying for a boat ride, we decide to tour the town by boat. Now loud, now soft, Caroline talked to all the creatures in the stream and was fussing about everything while I looked at the boats gliding over the water in silence. Though we did not see anything spectacular, we enjoyed every minute in the town that lies out of the range of the heavy traffic and noise of the large city. Zhouzhuang is worth visiting and, time permitting, I’d like to go there again.

To whom it may Concern,
I am writing this letter to attest to Paul’s skills in language and public relations. In the four years I have known him, I have been consistently impressed with his ability not only to negotiate complex ideas in other languages, but also to relate these things in a personable, conscientious fashion. His manner in these cases is both professional and personal, two qualities which I find particularly valuable in a professional setting. He has personally helped me in professional negotiation for everything from train tickets to contract information, and I have always been able to count on him.
I first met Paul in school, where he was a student at the university at which I taught. He was well-known to most of the westerners in town, who could call from different universities to ask for his help. Sometimes this help involved translation of professional documents, and sometimes it involved personal help in making phone calls. Many of these westerners continue to call him today, even though they live quite far away from him, because they have come to trust him very much. From this foundation in public relations Paul has found positions in various
professional capacities and has been highly-valued in each place. He is generally the sort of employee a company finds most valuable in its dealings with both foreign and domestic clients. He puts people at their ease with his
language ability and manner, both of which communicate to people that they can relax and simply would highly recommend Paul as an employee. His experience and manner are rare and very Moore

Dear Colleagues:
MS. XXX requested a letter of reference from me to support her application for graduate studies at your university. As her research adviser when she was a graduate student in my school of science Beijing University of Chemical Technology, I am pleased to comply with her request.
I have known Ms. Zhang since 2003, when she was admitted as a Master of Science candidate into the school. As her research adviser, I directed her research and found her a promising youth radiating with intelligence and creativity. During her first year, she got a very good record in major courses and earned good scores major and general GPA She particularly enjoyed challenging areas of studies such as Quantum Chemistry and Theory of Electrochemistry.
During the following two years, Ms. Zhang worked on a computational theory study of inorganic functional
materials project for his degree thesis “Theoretical Study of Electronic Structures of Several Representative Metal Element in the Hydrotalcite Slabs”. To make the theory model meet the actual materials, she faced down many practical problems, such as building reasonable module of inorganic materials, and calculation techniques. Working hard and independently, she cracked the problems one by one, and came up with a thesis that was characterized by academic excellence. During her period, she had three papers published in international journals.
Judging by her outstanding performance while she studied with me, I am convinced that Ms. Zhang has acquired the knowledge and intellectual sophistication on the basis of which she can undertake world-class training. I therefore lend her my enthusiastic support and would appreciate your favorable consideration of her application.

Dear Sir or x x x:
I take great pleasure in recommending Ren Ren, one of my favorite students, for admission into your distinguished graduate program.
Mr. Ren was admitted in 1986 at 14 years of age into the SPECIAL CLASS for the GIFTED YOUTHS, my
university’s unique program that caters to the intellectual needs of unusually talented Chinese youngsters. It was a rare privilege he earned with his nearly impeccable academic performance through the years of his elementary and secondary school.
He impressed me almost as he entered into my university, a major cradle of China’s scientific and technological talents. At the time, members of the Gifted Class all had to spend half a month studying by themselves the
principles of calculus and then take an exam so that we could evaluate their self-study capability. Mr. Ren scored the highest grade in that exam. He also exhibited a keenly whetted mind during class discussions. To my regret at the time, his English was not as good as his mathematics or physics. But I noticed he made a point of working especially hard in improving his English during his five undergraduate years with us. By now, he seems to be at least as proficient in English as most of his former classmates in the Gifted Class.
In my experience with Mr. Ren, I was impressed with not only his extraordinary intelligence but also his ambitions and persistence. I am sure that Mr. Ren will be an outstanding student in any doctoral program that he may care to eoll in. So I would like to support him firmly in his quest recommendation into account when considering his application. I would greatly appreciate it you decide to accept him as he wishes.
Yours sincerely

Dear Admissions Committee,
As Director of the State Key Laboratory of Electrical Insulation at ABC University in
BLANK, China, it is my sincere and distinct pleasure to recommend Ms. Xiao Xiao for your graduate program in BLANK.
I have known Ms. Xiao since 2001, when she was one of eighty students who completed their undergraduate thesis projects in my BLANK laboratory. Ms. Juan’s enthusiasm for and diligence in learning helped her become one of the most outstanding students in the entire group, making a strong, positive impression upon me. Ms. Xiao is a very driven woman and student who know what she wants to accomplish and does not falter in her chosen path. Her intellectual curiosity and desire to acquire new acknowledge continuously have led her to perform much study on her own outside the scope of her classes and research work; oftentimes, I witnessed her consulting scientific
books and journals to help her discover how she could improve her knowledge and her work in the laboratory. Countless times, Ms. Xiao remained in the laboratory for more than twelve hours in a row to complete her work and make sure there were no errors. With such devotion and fortitude, Ms. Xiao did not surprise me with her
superior performance on her thesis paper. In terms of her character, Ms. Xiao is an amiable, courteous, and helpful young woman who has many friends amongst our laboratory personnel.
Ms. Xiao is ready to move on to a more rigorous program of graduate study. Her academic performance, research work, and upstanding personal character have won her my highest recommendation, and I hope you give her application strong consideration. Thank you.

Dear Sir/Madam; To Whom It May Concern: (二)第一段:引文句子可以引用如: “It is a pleasure to recommend to you , a former student of mine at .” “I am very happy to have this opportunity to recommend , who is presently applying for admission to your graduate program in .” “I understand that is applying for admissions to your
graduate school, and has requested that I write this letter of recommendation for her/him.” “In my capacity as professor at **** University, I have known **x for three years, as both his/her advisor and professor.”
“ took two of my courses during the 1984-85 academic year, as follows; “****x” and “****x”.” “ was eolled in three of classes from September 1984 to June 1986 “**x” and “**x”.” “In my class , did excellent work. She always listened attentively, participated activitely in class, and handed in very good written assignment. “In particular, his/her research paper on was of exceptionally high quality, and showed that s/he fully understands and has a strong background in his/her field.” “When held the position of in this company she was one s/he was one of my best employees. His/her job responsibilities included , and s/he carried out his/her duties with exceptional skill and professionalism.” “S/he not only did his/her own work, but also helped other employees, and made many valuable contributions to the efficient running to our firm.” 第二段最后一段:可以提及申请人在班上(或公司里)的比较表现(譬如排名): “I was rate ‘s academic ability as in the top 10% of his/her class.” “Compared against other students that I have taught, I would say that ranks in the upper 10%. 举例: “Based on his/her previous performance, I am certain that would be a very successful student at your university.” “I believe that possesses all the qualities necessary to make an excellent graduate student in his/her chosen field, and am sure that s/he will make a fine addition to your campus.” (五)最后,以几句结尾作总结; “Therefore, I am happy to highly and without reservation recommend for admission to your graduate program. Your kind/serious consideration of his/her application would be most appreciated.” “I am thus pleased to give my full support and recommendation to ‘s
application for admission to your school. If any further information is required, please feel free to contact me.” Sincerely, Sincerely yours, Very truly yours, With best regards,
Dear Sir/Madam:
I am writing this letter of recommendation for , my former student.
I have known Mr. Caleb for more than 6 years since his freshman year at “University of Minnesota”. At that time, he took the course-- “Mathematical Analysis,” which I taught mainly for junior students majoring in Mathematics.
To my surprise, I found he was among the few stu
dents in his class who could keep up with the pace of my lectures. Moreover, he often posed thought-provoking questions during the course. Thus it was natural that I liked
discussing with this young man and became familiar with him. The more I knew him, the more I found he was talented at mathematics. As you can see, he got excellent scores on the course. In fact, he ranked No. 1 on this 270 hours course in the talented student class which has 34 intelligent others. With his outstanding talent and solid mathematical background, he also did quite well in most other courses during his undergraduate study.
By the way, you may wonder why his undergraduate scores look not so good compared to other Chinese applicants. It is easy to explain, because he belonged to the talented student class, which were required to endure harder test papers and stricter grading than most other college students did at least at “University of Minnesota”. He even served as Prof. Linda s Research Assistant for one year. No one could deny his commitment to his job. As a matter of fact, Prof. Linda s electronic lab happened to be neighboring my office and I could always see him working in the lab, either repairing the instruments or helping Prof. Linda collect lab reports. Maybe one more example will demonstrate his commitment more clearly. Once he suggested compiling a FORTRAN program to solve a complicated circuit problem in his class. In order to do that, he had to do a lot of computer work. However,
because there were few computers available in our computer lab, he had to wake up at 5 in winter to ensure the 1st position of the long waiting line for his classmates and himself! At last he and his classmates finished the program successfully with his great efforts.
As to his personality, I would like to say Mr. Caleb is a warm-hearted, honest and upright student. He was always ready to help others. During my lectures, many students got confused at some points and I could always see Mr. Caleb help them explain during breaks. In the meanwhile, I must admit that Mr. Caleb was a bit impatient
sometimes. Finally, I would like to conclude my recommendation as follows: frankly, Mr. Caleb is not a genius, but I promise his great intelligence, commitment to work and his kind nature will impress you deeply.
Thus I recommend him without reservation for his admission and financial aid to your program. Please feel free to contact me if needed.
Sincerely Yours,

It is a great pleasure for me to write this recommendation letter on behalf of Miss Yang, a promising student of our School of Economics. During her first two academic years, I was her advisor and now, I am teaching her course COMPARATIVE ECONOMIC SYSTEM.
Due to Miss Yang’s high intellect and incessant assiduity, she is an unquestionable top student. Her solid
mathematical and theoretical backgrounds are quite worthy of mentioning. Among the 150 students in her grade, she is one of the three who have never got a grade lower than 90 in MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS and LINEAR ALGEBRA. Also, her scores in MACROECONOMICS and MICROECONOMICS were the highest in her 32—student specialty class. At the same time, Miss Yang grasped every chance to satisfy her strong desire for advanced learning. Every time those alumni who had abstained ph. D degree in Ivy League came back to lecture to the graduate students, she audited without exception Their influence, in addition to her own

To Whom It May Concern:
I would like to enthusiastically recommend Pei Yi for admission to the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, University of California Berkeley. Pei Yi not only has academic background and technical qualifications for admission to your program, but also has demonstrated the independence, perseverance, and other personal characters necessary to succeed in Sciences.
I have worked with Pei Yi for one and a half years since he began the Principal Fund Project in 2002. I think he has developed a mature character as a young academic research worker. Pei Yi is a very diligent student in our lab. He is almost the last one leaving the lab every day. To acquaint himself with the work more quickly, he chose my graduate course: Electron Physics. Though he has an excellent scholastic aptitude, I was afraid that the course was a little difficult for an undergraduate student. As things went by, I found my worry was quite unnecessary. He studied relevant courses such as quantum mechanics by himself and got the highest score for my course. An intelligent young man with hard-working spirit can always live a fruitful and effective life.
I’m deeply impressed by his ability to work independently. I was very busy last year for official work, and have little time to guide him. However every time I see him, he was working or reading in the lab. He told me that he learned by himself through reading the academic journal and learned from other groups in our laboratory. In addition, he has a strong desire for good quality of academic work. He attended every seminar and had a successful corporation with researchers from other groups.
A flexible and adaptable people can do any work assigned to him, so does Mr. Pei. During the period of his principal fund research, he established the suitable model for field emission, and finished the simulation of space charge effect. He also made prominent progress on calculation of field-enhancement factor and wrote two papers. One paper is accepted by “Series of The First Principal Fund Papers” and another paper is to be submitted to an international journal. This is also a demonstration of his Science and English ability.
It is my belief that Pei Yi’s combination of the technical skills with a high level of moral standards has been critical to his personal and professional development and he will succeed in any task due to these abilities and characters. If you require any further information about the student, please feel free to contact me.

From the in-depth observation, this trend is triggered bothby the technology innovation and work philosophy hold by the new generation.
Inthe first place, social developments have brought about a more flexible workstyle. It will be really demanding to imagine any point of getting retired fromthe place where their career got initiated. Instead, they are more eager to trynew things and gain fresh experience from frequent job-hopping, from whichtheir life could be made more colorful and diversified. Specifically, the rapidprogress of internet and transport technology makes it possible for people to possessa high degree of mobility. In other words, we are not confined to working inone place as we did in the past. Indeed it is not a rarity that we havebreakfast in Tokyo but conference punctually in the afternoon in Beijing.
Inthe second place, another imperative motivation to the changing jobs or careersderives from the attitudes towards money and life. In most cases, change theirjobs for higher salary as long as striving forward forever is the most acceptedoccupational principles. As for the employees in the poor welfare countries, ifone can get a more appealing offer from some other employer, what is the pointof staying in the original one.
Onlyby job-hopping, people may form a more precise and mature attitudes towards thecareer and thus not being carried away by this ever-changing fickle world. Althoughjob-hopping can be partly attributed to temporary confusing and perplexing, itis mainly heading for a highly mobilized and high-qualified lifestyle which canbe accomplished by marketing and commercial methods.
Asfor companies, they can benefit a lot as well. Frequent job-hopping byemployees indicates the incompetence in the corporation welfare. ThereforeCompanies should take up an inescapable responsibility through providing alltheir employers with a clear and transparent ladder of promotion, training injob ethics and a sense of responsibility, as well as sufficient benefits inorder to alleviate employee’s impulses of leaving. By doing so, corporationshave achieved high competence in marketing through continuous adjustment.

Many children find it isdifficult to concentrate or pay attention at school. What are the causes? Thepossible solutions to this problems?
Theteenagers on the campus today could nearly capture the latest news timely asthose off-campus adults do. It means that they are able to freely connect theirfriends and relatives through modern communication devices and Internet. However, they are inferior to adults to rationally evaluate the extensiveinformation, incapable of defending the intentional distraction from the junkinformation. Therefore they are vulnerable to be distracted.
Theculprits of the unexpected phenomenon mainly derived from the over-popularityof internet. In past times, even just 5 to 10 years ago, without Wi-Fi ormobile phones, students were relatively isolated on campus. They even watchedfew TV. Students were not capable to achieve the off-campus information or tocommunicate with their net-friends. In addition, the teachers at that timeseemed more focused on supervising and monitoring their students. Hence, theonly entertainment activity for the old times teenagers were restrictedly toread extra-curricular books.
Anothermain reason in this regard lies in the performance of modern mass media whileits perspective on criteria of a good student remains not merely on achievingexcellent academic scores, but on turning into more diversified and colorfulextracurricular lives, such as what was shown in Gossip Girl or the Big BangTheory. Besides, the morality of mass media is now unexpectedly eroding a lot.It promotes those distorted life styles on students intentionally, aiming toimproving their circulation rate instead.
Thereare, probably, several answers to this thorny issue. To start with educational institutesand teaching staff should be more actively aware of the negatives and thuseffectively cut off or limit the chances for students to have access to thedigital devices too arbitrarily especially during the lecturing. Meanwhile, mass media need to be more socially responsible and educational institutesshould limit the access to particular web pages of teenagers in the technicalway, such as You-tube or other SNS (social network service) websitesselectively close some channels to those youth under 18.

The international communityshould act immediately to reduce theuse of fossil fuels. Do you agree ordisagree?
As the industry is more andmore expanding and booming, the fossil fuels like coal, gas, mine are less andless, leaving the progressively worsening environment problems. Undoubtedly, the international communities uniting the related governments can never refraintheir obligation to restrict the over-developed use of these fuels, so as toprotect the environment on the root basis.
Whenit comes to the immediate block out or sudden reduction to the fossil fuels, perspectives from the fuel plants, local governments, regular in habitantsdiffer greatly. As to those fuel-reliant plants, they definitely show great unwillingn

we are the world ,we are the future someone said “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”. i don’t know who wrote these words, but i’ve always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want it to be. we are all in the position of the farmers. if we plant a good seed ,we reap a good harvest. if we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all. we are young. “how to spend the youth?” it is a meaningful question. to answer it, first i have to ask “what do you understand by the word youth?” youth is not a time of life, it’s a state of mind. it’s not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips or supple knees. it’s the matter of the will. it’s the freshneof the deep spring of life. a poet said “to see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour. several days ago, i had a chance to listen to a lecture. i learnt a lot there. i’d like to share it with all of you. let’s show our right palms. we can see three lines that show how our and life is. i have a short line of life. what about yours? i wondered whether we could see our future in this way. well, let’s make a fist. where is our future? where is our love, career, and life? tell , it is in our hands. it is held in ourselves. we all want the future to be better than the past. but the future can go better itself. don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened. from the past, we’ve learnt that the life is tough, but we are tougher. we’ve learnt that we can’t choose how we feel, but we can choose what about it. failure doesn’t mean you don’t have it, it does mean you should do it in a different way. failure doesn’t mean you should give up, it does mean you must try harder. as what i said at the beginning, “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”. the past has gone. nothing we do will change it. but the future is in front of us. believe that what we give to the world, the world will give to us. and from today on, let’s be the owners of ourselves, and speak out “we are the world, we are the future.”

“Youchicken!”hecried,lookingatTomwithcontempt.
在西方文化中,lion(狮子)或lioness(母狮子)是权力的象征,常用来形容处于主宰地位的人物。
