Cinco de Mayo means “May 5th” in Spanish. Its an important Mexican holiday. On that day, Mexicans remember defeating① the French army at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership② of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin. It makes Mexicans proud of their country.
For the most part the celebrations contain③ food, music and dancing. There are big parties every May 4th. Friends and relatives eat together. There are parades④ and concerts, too. The holiday can bring people together.
However, a common misconception⑤ in the United States is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexicos Independence Day. Mexicos independence Day is September 16 and is the most important national holiday in Mexico.
